The tags, however, make it quite difficult for humans to read HTML and understand how the text will look after the computer renders it. Computers have no trouble reading these because they just follow the syntax (the rules of HTML) and apply the formatting that matches the tags. HTML can be quite complex, with dozens and dozens of tags, such as, ,, , and lots of others. When it sees “ this is some bold text ”, it understands that anything between the and tags should appear in bold. When your web browser “reads” a web page, it interprets the HTML tags and applies the relevant formatting. For example, if you want to bold text, you type “ this is some bold text ”. Many people like to create an attachemnts folder and keep all their media there.To format text with HTML, you put tags around the text. You’ll need to make sure that the media exists in the vault folder first. You can embed media in your Obsidian documents. You can embed just a paragraph by using the same syntax but, you’ll need to include the “^” symbol after the page name like so: !] Embedding images and other file types. ![]() To embed a single page use this syntax: !] Notice how it’s the same as linking to page except you just put the exclamation mark in front? People have found many creative uses for this feature. This is great because when the content is updated on the original page it is also updated everywhere it’s embedded. This is powerful because you can show an entire page within a page, or just a paragraph or two. In Software like Obsidian.md and Roam Research you can link to other pages or blocks. ![]() External links look like this: ( ) Embedding contentĮmbedding content is another thing that makes linked thought software so powerful. You can link to websites and files on your computer by using external links. Like Microsoft Word or Apple pages Obsidian allows you to perform some basic text editing like making text: Bold, Italic, Strike Through and highlighted. Here is a walkthrough of my Obsidian.md personal knowledge management system. You can use the contents menu to jump to a section you want to read more about. My approach will be to explain obsidian as a text editing tool, and then we’ll add “linked thought” at a later stage as the icing on the cake. While this is one of the big selling points of Obsidian it can be a confusing topic for someone that is just starting out. Most Obsidian Tutorials start with how to link pages together, this doesn’t make any sense. It is aimed at beginners and people who are unfamiliar with markdown. This article is meant to be a quick reference guide on the basics of Obsidian and the Markdown specific to obsidian. If you are unfamiliar with markdown it can be tricky to get started with obsidian. People also use it to support their own work: everyone from software developers to lawyers are seeing the value in the idea of linked thought. People have used it to write academic papers and novels. ![]() Applications like Obsidian.md and Roam Research are spearheading a knowledge management revolution. The applications go much further than note taking. It is like having your very own wikipedia. “Linked Thought” refers to a group of note taking applications that allow you to seamlessly link thoughts and notes together. ![]() It is different from other markdown editors because it has jumped on the linked thought band wagon.
